Over 80% of the developed world now rely on internet to obtain information. But even with the rise of new medias, it has only decreased the time people spent watching television by only 1%.
We are naturally attracted to meaningful imageries, sounds and sensations. While most of pop culture is represented on the internet in some way, people still travel halfway around the world to visit museums, monuments and wonders of nature.
Semiology suggests that the meanings they represent as a combination of images, sounds and words remains unchanged., That leaves sensation as the only element that cannot be represented by the above.
If we look back in our lives, our memories are merely a series of events that has affected our senses. Our biggest fears, our saddest moments, our pride and joy.
Andy Warhol once said "Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art." As commercial artists we are in the business of sensations. That effectively makes us glorified prostitutes. If 80% of advertising goes by unnoticed as suggested by AC Nielson. It is as good as saying 80% of businesses paying for sex are not getting it.
We have more than a hundred years of commercial art since the advent of the printing press, many of which have affected our senses.
